Status report on Tokyo and Coronavirus

On 21 February a third status report was issued by the IPC giving an update on the monitoring of the coronavirus outbreak in the context of the upcoming 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Key messages are as follows:,

  • The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to continue as planned with athlete health and well-being remaining a top priority. So far, the outbreak of coronavirus has had minimal impact on overall preparations and there is no case for postponing or cancelling the Games.
  • Countermeasures against infectious diseases constitute an important part of plans to host safe and secure sport events. There is a multi institutional approach to defining guidelines and best practice to ensure athlete and spectator safety.
  • WHO does not believe this is a pandemic and according to its latest Situation Report (published 19 February). The number of people affected globally does not yet meet warrant classification as a pandemic.
  • The World Health Organisation website should remain your main source of information regarding this matter: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 . Based on the information available to us to date (25 February 2020), we continue with preparations to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
